Over a career of more than 25 years, Melissa Smith has revolutionized WEX, a fintech company in Portland, Maine, by taking it public, navigating the pandemic, and expanding the company’s employee benefits unit and fleet management services. Smith is chair and CEO of WEX, which offers tools that help firms such as Expedia and Mastercard streamline and manage financial operations. Smith led the company as president since 2013 and as CEO since 2014, following a stint as president of the Americas and a decade as the chief financial officer, when she oversaw WEX’s initial public offering. Since taking the helm, she has led WEX into new niches; in 2019, WEX teamed up with electric vehicle charging network ChargePoint to allow electric fleets to use WEX’s fuel cards at ChargePoint locations. Smith is a trustee of MaineHealth and sits on the board of directors of the credit bureau Equifax. She earned a bachelor of science in business administration from the University of Maine.
