TECH POWER PLAYERS 50 | RANKED #13

CEO and Cofounder, Form Energy

BIOGRAPHY

Why a Tech Power Player? For being a leader in the development of a safe, reliable energy source.

As CEO and cofounder of Somerville-based Form Energy, Mateo Jaramillo is out to revolutionize the grid by rethinking one technology: batteries. Form Energy, an MIT spinout founded in 2017, is developing low-cost batteries made from iron, water, and air. The use of cheap and plentiful materials is not the only breakthrough; the batteries can store electricity for several days to ensure the reliability of wind and solar energy regardless of weather and grid conditions. Under Jaramillo, Form Energy has raised hundreds of millions of dollars to make these battery systems a reality, and construction is slated to begin this year on its first battery manufacturing facility, in West Virginia. Prior to joining Form Energy, Jaramillo worked at Tesla’s energy division, where he helped launch products such as the Powerwall battery system. Jaramillo holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Harvard University and a master’s degree in theology from Yale University.
