Why a Tech Power Player? For advances in fusion energy, climate tech, and entrepreneurship.

Bob Mumgaard is the cofounder and CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, a Devens-based startup looking to commercialize fusion power, the atomic energy that powers the sun. Fusion has long captured the imagination of scientists and futurists, and has more recently been hailed by investors as a safe, unlimited, carbon-free source of power that could help combat climate change. Since it was spun out of MIT in 2018, Commonwealth Fusion has raised more than $2 billion toward its goal of developing a commercial fusion reactor, which would create pollution-free energy without long-term nuclear waste. In 2021, Commonwealth Fusion raised $1.8 billion, the largest funding round ever by a Massachusetts company. Mumgaard has a BS in engineering physics and mechanical engineering from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, an MS in nuclear science and engineering from MIT, and a PhD in applied plasma physics from MIT.
